(CNN) -- S. Truett Cathy, who grew his boneless chicken sandwich business from one store in Georgia to the Chick-fil-A chain -- a $5 billion business with more than 1,800 locations -- died early Monday morning, the company announced.
He was 93.
"He died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones," Chick-fil-A said in a statement posted on its website.
This isn't the guy who protested gay marriage: that was his son, who is still in charge. So, homophobia didn't die at the top of that company yet.
Yep, I saw this on Twitter this morning. Beliefs aside, they have some seriously yummy food.
I have a hard time believing his son didn't pick it up from somewhere.
Knowing the south like I do, I'd be incredibly shocked if that guy hadn't taken
part in some sort of bigotry over the years. All in all, not a death I'm going to
mourn.
I go to Chick-Fill-A for the food not for the religious beliefs. I figure as long as one of their employees doesn't come up to me and try to convert me to their views we're good. I do agree that the son wold probably have had to have picked his views up from somewhere.
Understood, Bryan. But they peddle their views. It's part of their advertising even. I was unaware of this until moving to a southern state for awhile.
In the same way that Ray Crock's McDonald's really was in the real estate business, Chick Fill'a is in the values business. Take it or leave it. I have no actual opinion on what you buy or sell, except the opinion that the market should be free and open for you to do so. That means the guy could say what he wanted about gays, and have, as the conservatives call it, "the freedom to fail," or be responded to. Of course, his branding people knew he'd get huge supporters running the persecution myth narrative, coming uot in droves to get a chicken sandwich and show their support for his stance. So, in the end, not a bad business decision for them, based on where they're headquartered.
